Energy Storage Canada Welcomes Ontario Government’s Capacity Procurement Target

Toronto, ON - Energy Storage Canada (ESC) applauds today’s announcement from Ontario’s Minister of Energy, Todd Smith, whose government has just committed to the largest storage specific procurement in Canada.  The new procurement targets a minimum capacity of 1.5GW, with eligibility for energy storage resources up to 2.5GW and beyond in procurements expected to be administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) over the coming months.

“With this announcement, the Ford government recognizes the critical role energy storage resources must play in ensuring reliability, resiliency and helping to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in Ontario’s electricity grid,” says ESC Executive Director, Justin Rangooni.

In addition, a 2020 report from Energy Storage Canada, Unlocking Potential: An Economic Valuation of Energy Storage in Ontario, concluded an introduction of at least 1,000 MW of energy storage resources in Ontario would provide an estimated net savings for electricity customers of up to $2 billion over the next decade. Energy storage assets are uniquely able to provide these savings to the grid due to their flexibility and capacity for using surplus energy in the province.

A diversity of energy storage technologies and applications is the key to Ontario realizing an affordable, sustainable, and resilient electricity grid and meeting the province’s net zero goals. Moreover, the growth of the energy storage industry in the province, will contribute to a further increase in jobs available to Ontarians throughout the province’s transition.

Energy Storage Canada looks forward to continuing to work with its members through policy advocacy, education, collaboration, and research, to ensure the needs of Ontario’s grid are met.

This announcement is sure be among the topics of conversation at Energy Storage Canada’s upcoming annual conference, Accelerating Canada’s Energy Transition, October 11 & 12, 2022. If you haven’t already, be sure to get your tickets at: https://www.energystoragecanada.org/conference
