Ameresco’s Newmarket Hydro Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Facility Tour

Don’t miss one of our most popular events! Ameresco designed, built, owns, operates and maintains two energy storage systems on the Newmarket Hydro’s distribution grid. An IESO project, this 5 MW facility is delivering ratepayer and environmental value. Ameresco is bringing its leadership and technology expertise to this pilot project, while demonstrating the value of future ancillary services derived from these energy storage facilities. The advanced BESS systems are designed to:

  • Store Electricity During Off-Peak Times

  • Utilize Stored Power During Peak Demand Periods

  • Provide Excess Energy Supply Back to the Grid When Demand Is High

  • Enable Peak Load Shaving

  • Deliver Grid Reliability and Stability

Tour includes transportation to and from our conference venue at the Toronto Reference Library 789 Yonge Street, Toronto.

  • Including as a reference standard in UL 9540, “Standard for Energy Storage Systems and Equipment”

  • How UL 9540A allows manufacturers to meet NFPA 855, “Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems” and the International Fire Code (IFC)

Presentation Summary:

Combining BESS with other energy assets, especially solar PV and wind energy power generators plays important role in optimizing energy use.  For several years, battery energy storage systems (BESS) have been providing effective reactive support and voltage control, frequency-response services to grid operators and utilities, in addition to offering peak shaving and power quality to load customers and communities. This workshop focuses on use cases where batteries are combined with both solar PV generation as well as with electric vehicle charging infrastructure in a DC-coupled arrangement and explains its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with an AC-coupled system.
