April 18 – 20, 2017: Energy Storage Association 27th Annual Conference and Expo

The Energy Storage Association 27th Annual Conference and Expo is the must-attend event in energy storage – bringing together the global energy storage industry for three days of relevant content, and unique networking and business development opportunities.

Our conference this past April was record-breaking in many ways – we featured the first-ever multi-country USTDA reverse trade mission, and had more than 1,600 attendees, 130 speakers, 40 educational sessions, six site tours to cutting-edge installations and multiple workshops led by renowned experts.

ESA will continue to build on that momentum when we bring the conference to Denver, April 18 – 20, 2017. As one of the largest renewable energy markets in the country, Denver will provide the perfect location for ESA to expand the conversation about storage and renewables.

The showcase will include 90,000 square feet of exhibit space and we are planning more innovative content than ever before.

December 7, 2016: 5th Canadian German Smart Grid & Energy Storage Series, Toronto,

This half-day conference focuses on combined solar PV and energy storage solutions for residential installations in Ontario. Solar PV combined with battery storage solutions provide home owners with as much self-sufficiency as possible. Decreasing battery prices contribute to making storage financially attractive especially when feed-in tariffs are being phased out.

Germany has been the first European country to introduce an incentive program for energy storage in residential installations where costs for batteries can partly be recovered. Over the past 25 years, more than 1.5 million solar power plants with a total capacity of 40 GWp have been installed in Germany. The majority are solar power plants with a capacity of smaller than 10 kWp installed on residential rooftops. They build the foundation for the promising market development of small energy storage systems.

ESC members receive a 20% discount. Contact Shirley Darling at Shirley.Darling@energystoragecanada.org for details. Click for the Program.

July 1-3, 2015 Offshore Energy & Storage Symposium, Edinburgh, UK

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we are pleased to invite you to participate in the 2nd Offshore Energy & Storage Symposium organized in conjunction with the Institute for Energy Systems, The University of Edinburgh, which will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Offshore renewables form a key part of the future generation mix in many countries and are critical to achieving commitments to low-carbon energy.

Energy storage increases their potential penetration level and can reduce overall system costs. OSES is the only international conference devoted to offshore energy storage; it embraces all aspects of energy storage that is either embodied offshore or serves directly to help accommodate offshore renewables.

The Organizing Committee also encourages companies and institutions to showcase their advanced products and equipment in the conference area and looks forward to welcoming all delegates to the main conference meal to be held at Edinburgh Castle.

About the Speakers

Tom Chapman, Markets Group, IESO

Tom has close to 20 years of wide ranging energy industry experience spanning public, private and consulting roles across North America and Europe. His career began in the U.K where he worked for a joint venture start-up competing in the newly liberalised natural gas market. After moving to Ontario 10 years ago, Tom worked at the Ontario Ministry of Energy, most recently as Director, Transmission and Distribution Policy where he was responsible for advancing many electricity policy initiatives such as smart grid, network policy and energy storage. For just over a year Tom has been working for Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator where he is responsible for Market Design and Development.

Jason Chee-Aloy, Managing Director, Power Advisory LLC

Jason Chee-Aloy joined Power Advisory LLC in September 2010. Power Advisory LLC is a leading management consulting firm specializing in electricity market analysis, business strategy, generation and transmission procurement, policy development, regulatory and litigation support, contract management support, market design, project feasibility assessment and technical due diligence. Mr. Chee-Aloy is presently acting for multiple Canadian and non-Canadian clients with business and policy interests in Ontario, across Canada, and in the United States, within the areas of generation development and investment opportunities, transmission development, market assessment and intelligence, business strategy development, market design, and policy development. In 2011, Mr. Chee-Aloy acted for the IESO as consultant and facilitator to the Electricity Market Forum which delivered a report and roadmap for potential evolution of Ontario’s electricity market.

Prior to joining Power Advisory LLC, Jason was the Director of Generation Procurement at the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) from 2005 to 2010. Prior to joining the OPA, Mr. Chee-Aloy worked for Ontario’s IESO from 1999 to 2005 where he was closely involved with restructuring Ontario’s electricity sector through development and implementation of market design and market surveillance initiatives. From 2003 to 2005, Mr. Chee-Aloy led the IESO’s resource adequacy and capacity market initiatives by chairing the Long-Term Resource Adequacy Working Group and delivering detailed design for a forward capacity market.

Mr. Chee-Aloy has also worked as an Energy Economist, in the public and private sectors, analysing competitive electricity and natural gas markets.

Mr. Chee-Aloy holds an M.A. in Economics and graduated from York University and the University of Toronto.

Cliff Hamal, Managing Director, Navigant Economics

Cliff Hamal provides economic analysis and strategic consulting on issues involving changes in the electricity industry. He specializes on matters where a deep understanding of the nature of markets, the technical realities of power system operations and the behavior of competitive market participants are of particular value, and tends to be engaged in instances where circumstances call for innovative approaches. His work covers a broad spectrum of objectives, including advocating for changes in public policy, developing strategic solutions, valuing investment opportunities and assessing claims of market manipulation. His work has involved markets across the United States and Canada, and he has testified before courts and regulatory agencies in both countries.

The operation of capacity markets has been an issue of particular interest for Mr. Hamal for some time, including a presentation he gave to Ontario’s Market Design Committee in the late 1990s. In recent years he has been an outspoken critic of centralized annual capacity auction approaches, having given numerous speeches, articles and testimony about the shortcomings of such markets in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.

John Vellone, Partner, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

John Vellone is a partner in the Toronto office and is a member of the Electricity Markets and IT Groups. He practises corporate/commercial and regulatory law with a focus on energy law and matters relating to the Ontario electricity sector. John specializes in the corporate/commercial and regulatory components of electricity markets and infrastructure revitalization.

April 16, 2015: Webinar: Clean Energy Group Webinar: The Need for National Collaboration on Distributed Energy Storage

Click here to register for the webinar:

Energy Storage is one of the most promising new trends in the clean energy field today, especially batteries when combined with distributed solar (solar+storage). With the array of benefits that energy storage has to offer–power system resiliency, renewables integration, instantaneous load balancing–it’s not surprising that the recent trend in solar with storage deployment has been heralded as one of the key energy industry developments that will revolutionize the way we produce and use electricity, on both sides of the meter.

The U.S. is in the early stages of this new energy era, with various companies and countries vying for market position. It is an opportune time for stakeholders–NGOs, companies, policy makers, and investors–to start working together to accelerate the trend towards a robust commercial market.

Clean Energy Group has released a new report calling for more collaboration on policies to promote emerging distributed energy storage technologies, Distributed Energy Storage: A Case for National and International Collaboration. The creation of both national and international networks could advance new and effective policies to support distributed energy storage technologies.

To discuss the key findings of the report, Clean Energy Group President Lew Milford and Program Associate Seth Mullendore will host an upcoming webinar. They will be joined by guest speaker Katherine Hamilton from the Energy Storage Association (ESA). The ESA is dedicated to promoting the adoption of competitive and reliable energy storage systems for electric service. Learn more about the ESA at http://energystorage.org/.
